Biography
A word of thanks, from Jasper
I was seventeen when I traveled from Belgium with my mother to visit Binnie in Canada. Our families were already tied together by history: his wife was the daughter of a Canadian soldier who had been stationed with my grandfather during the Second World War. That is how the friendship began. In the years that followed we visited one another often, summer after summer.
Binnie treated me like his own son, and he passed on two loves that have shaped my whole life: the love of Corvettes and the love of computers.
I owe my career as an ICT coordinator to him. I still remember the patience he showed while helping me build my very first computer, never once making me feel small for what I did not yet know. He was the one who taught me to work with tools, who sparked my curiosity about how things work and how to mend them, whether that was a machine, a computer, or something in and around the house.
Binnie's Buttercup, his yellow 1977 Corvette, was the first car I ever drove. He talked me through it step by step, calm and never rushing me, and to this day not many people can say they learned to drive in a Corvette. An ocean lay between Belgium and Canada, so we never got the long hours in the garage together over that car that I would have loved, but the distance never weakened what he gave me, and I carry it with me every single day.
Binnie is my great example, and not only with his hands. He showed me how to be: always kind, never a bad word about anyone, always honest and sincere. If I can pass on even a part of what he gave me, I will have done well.
Recently Binnie entrusted this website to my care. For me that is a far reaching sign of trust, and I do not take it lightly. Looking after his site, his stories, and his Corvette is my way of thanking him, and of honoring everything he taught me. Thank you, Binnie, for all of it.
