What is in these fifteen books

Chevrolet gave every dealer a specification book for the model year, and it was the book you reached for when a customer asked a question you could not answer from memory. It is not a repair manual. It is the car described in figures: what it measures, what it weighs, what was bolted to it and what the codes on it mean.

The books organise that into a handful of sections, which is also roughly what this search will find for you. General and Serial Numbers and Identification cover the VIN, the trim tag and where they are stamped. Dimensions and Weights holds the lengths, widths, heights, ground clearances, tread and the shipping and curb weights per body style. Power Trains is the largest section by far and covers the engines, their horsepower and torque ratings, the transmissions, the axle ratios and which combinations were allowed together. Chassis takes in the brakes, the steering, the suspension, the wheels and tires. Alongside those sit shorter sections on lubrication, the fuel and exhaust systems, body construction and glass area, interior appointments, and vehicle performance factors.

Several years also carry the manufacturer's own MVMA specification form bound in at the back, which repeats many figures in a standard industry layout. Where the two disagree, and occasionally they do, the search will show you both so you can judge.

Why the search exists

These PDFs are photographic scans made in 2001. They contain page images and no text at all, so downloading one and pressing Ctrl+F finds nothing, however sure you are that the answer is in there somewhere. Finding a figure meant knowing roughly which section it lived in and paging through until you saw it.

Every page has now been read by character recognition, and that transcription is what you are searching. It is good at words and unreliable with numbers, which is why a result gives you the place and the original page rather than an answer. Think of it as an index to fifteen books that never had one.

What is a Corvette dealer specification manual?

It is the reference book Chevrolet supplied to its dealers for one model year. A salesman or service writer used it to answer a customer's question on the spot: how long the car is, what it weighs, which axle ratio came with which engine, what the option codes mean, how much fuel the tank holds. One book per model year, running from 1968 to 1982 for the C3.

Is this the same as a shop manual or an assembly manual?

No. A shop manual tells you how to repair the car and an assembly manual shows how it was put together on the line. A specification manual tells you what the car IS: its figures, its options and its identification. The three sets do not overlap much, which is why owners often want all of them.

Why does the search text sometimes look garbled?

The books are photographic scans from 2001 with no text layer, so the words you search were produced by reading those scans with character recognition. It handles words well and numbers badly: a 5 at the start of a figure often comes out wrong. That is why every result sends you to the original page rather than quoting a number at you.

Can I search inside the PDFs myself instead?
