1982 VIN range
1982 Corvettes ran from 1G1AY8786C5100001 through 1G1AY8786C5125407, all built at Bowling Green. The sixth digit is a zero on Collector Edition cars, which carried their own body code and their own serial sequence. The ninth digit is a check code and varies from car to car. The VIN decoder breaks down each position, and the build date decoder works out roughly when in the year a car was assembled.

What changed for 1982
- Cross-Fire Injection arrived, the first fuel injected Corvette since 1965. It was not the mechanical injection of 1957 to 1965: it combined two injectors with Computer Command Control, refined in 1982 to make about eighty adjustments per second, ten times the previous year's rate.
- The automatic was a new four-speed with a torque converter clutch operating in the top three gears and a higher first gear ratio of 3.07:1.
- Hoods had solenoid-operated doors that directed fresh air into the air cleaner at full throttle.
- A positive fuel cutoff replaced the 1981 fuel metering system to prevent run-on, and the charcoal air filtering element was replaced by a paper one.
- The exhaust used a smaller, lighter catalytic converter, with the pipes redesigned to deliver hotter gases to it and raise its efficiency.
- The Collector Edition brought the first lifting rear glass on a Corvette, and at $22,537.59 the first base price over twenty thousand dollars.
